October 18, 2023 Lisa Arronis

This is a little blog about the products we have chosen to stock and why

we are working on it... so thanks for your patience

you might have clicked the QR code, and be wandering around the shop

or you might be checking us out online

either way were glad your here

were going to start with our acrylic paint

…...what is it?

a water-based, fast-drying paint made of tiny particles of plastic acrylic resin and pigment. It is typically non-toxic, and when dry, the particles fuse to become a robust and water-resistant paint.

Please consider the environment and seperate paint solids from your rinse water. Microplastics are damaging our environment*

*Here is a link to Golden Artist Colours article on their blog Just Paint that explains the process of separating your waste paint solids for proper disposal at your local tip.

Widely used by artists since the 1960s, acrylic paint is versatile, can be used on multiple surfaces and can be used thickly or thinly depending how much water or medium is added to it.

a couple of things to remember...

  • Its colour becomes darker when dry, so be aware of this when mixing colours.

  • it’s hard to remove from brushes or clothing once dried so don’t paint in your best shirt!

OUR ACRYLIC RANGE INCLUDES

Why we stock it

High quality student and beginner Amsterdam Standard Acrylic Paints are a popular line of acrylic paints manufactured by Royal Talens, a Dutch company that has been producing art supplies since 1899. High-quality pigments, bright clear colors, and smooth consistency. We recommend them for mid career artists, students, and hobbyists While it is true that normally it is easier to mix colors with professional paint, and you will have cleaner results, We have never had issues with Amsterdam Standard when colour mixing, and they are highly recommended for use with gel plates.

LIQUITEX BASICS

Liquitex invented artists’ acrylics back in 1955 and. Made for all creatives, Basics gives you the perfect balance of quality and economy. This means they are made with the same lightfast*, fine art pigments as the professional range, but just a lighter load.

why we stock it

All colors are nice, clean, and never create muddy mixes like some cheap acrylics. Mixed and single pigmented colors which says a lot about quality, they don’t use cheap mixes for paints. NO brushstrokes! They are softer than Golden or Liquitex heavy body easier to apply on canvas and smoother finish. The are super versatile, from paper to T-shirts or ceramics. They have great coverage and are really opaque or semi-opaque so it is easier for layering.

JO SONJA MATTE FLOW ACRYLICS

Made by Chroma in Australia. They are a low viscosity waterproof paint (creamy and fairly thin, but not quite "fluid", despite being labeled as "fluid acrylic" for several years). The paints come in a few formats including mini 20ml tube sets and 75ml individual tubes. 80 different professional tube colors.  Flow formula acrylics offering the opacity of color and the beautiful, velvet matte finish associated with traditional gouache plus superb handling and brushing characteristics.

They remain waterproof even when extremely diluted with water, but I would only trust the long term durability of this technique on porous surfaces (toothy absorbent watercolor paper, canvas, cloth, wood and gritty gesso)

why we stock it

We were asked to stock this particular paint by local artists. It is popular with many beginners for its affordability.

ATELIER INTERACTIVE

Chroma is an Australian art supply manufacturer that makes acrylics and oil paints. Unlike other acrylics which dry quickly, the Atelier Interactive paints are marketed as being ‘open’ in that you can make them reworkable again even after they’ve dried and keep blending as if it was fresh paint.

For controlled wet blending apply Unlocking Formula by brush or atomiser to keep paintings wet as long as desired. Drying is normal.

If you’ve left it to dry for a longer time, you can still activate it by spraying it with the Atelier Interactive Unlocking Formula. If you want to ensure that a layer of paint remains fixed, you can either mix some of the Binder Medium or Fast Medium/Fixer with the paint while you’re working, or just paint a layer over it as you work.

For ‘normal’ drying: Do not use Unlocking Formula.

To accelerate drying: When a painting is placed in direct sunlight it will take around 20 minutes to dry. When sunlight is not available hair dryers and other sources of warmth can be used. Unlocking Formula evaporates like water and does not slow the drying process.

why we stock it

A great Australian product, and for its ability to be "reactivated". Most acrylic paints dry. That's it. Forever locked in. Atelier Interactive has the ability to be kept workable for much longer than traditional acrylics and you have some of the benefits of an oil paint-like product, you don't have the odours, the mess, or the endless hours of waiting for paint to dry.

MATISSE STRUCTURE

A rich impasto paint that artists love. Available in over 120 colours, this paint is ideal for application with a brush or palette knife for striking textured effects. The intense, vibrant colours of the Structure Formula paints cover the full colour spectrum, including several uniquely Australian colours. Only the finest quality pigments and ingredients are selected for the Matisse range of premium acrylic colours. All have the highest lightfastness rating of ASTM I or II and are archival quality - so you can create with confidence knowing your artwork will stand the test of time. Each are fully compatible with the range of Matisse Artists Medium working together to create a highly versatile painting system for all artists.

why we stock it

A fabulous Australian made product with unique Australian colours. Exceptional Pigmentation: Widely recognized as heavily saturated with pigment, these paints offer excellent covering power and maintain strong, vibrant hues even when heavily diluted. Lightfastness: All colors boast the highest archival quality with ASTM lightfastness ratings of I or II, ensuring your artwork will resist fading over time. Matte/Satin Finish: Unlike many modern acrylics that dry with a plastic-like gloss, Matisse paints are free from bulking agents, resulting in a beautiful, natural, slightly satin finish
